Stevenage MP Barbara Follett visited UIA Insurance on Friday 10th October, to learn more about the not-for-profit company's unique 'insurance with principles'. |
For the last 100 years, UIA have supported the trade union market with a wide range of insurance products, currently offered to over 3 million members of UNISON, Unite, the Communication Workers Union (CWU), the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (Usdaw) and The National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT), to name just a few.
UIA have been based in Stevenage for 13 years and in that time the company has worked hard to support the local community. Their Charitable Foundation was set up in 1999 to help a range of causes that are aligned to the ethos and beliefs of their trade union partners. The list of grant recipients includes local projects such as 'Relate for North Herts and Stevenage', the 'Domestic Violence Forum of East Herts and Broxbourne', and 'The living room' which was set up with the aim of breaking the cycle of drug addiction.
Ms Follett said "I always enjoy visiting local employers and UIA's 'insurance with principles' service is a wonderful example. Without the support of UIA's Charitable Foundation these local projects would have been unable to help so many of my constituents."
Ian Templeton, Managing Director of UIA, said "Our role in the local community is key to how we support the wider community in which we operate. We welcome this visit from Barbara Follett as a way of strengthening our ties with the local area."
UIA is a major employer in the local community and Ms Follett also had the chance to meet some of UIA's 140 staff, most of whom hail from Stevenage and the surrounding area.
One of the company's strengths is investing in training and development for their employees. Through individual training plans UIA ensure that staff members are encouraged to continually develop in their field of specialisation. With over 85% CII qualified or working towards qualifications and many others being supported in professional qualifications, it is a policy that is working well to benefit all within the organisation.
