Beware of bogus workmen burglars

Homeowners have been warned to be vigilant against fraudulent traders who may try to gain access to their houses.

It comes after two elderly women in Swinton were targeted by bogus workmen on the same day.

To access the property in both cases, one of the men posed as a workman and asked the elderly occupant to turn off the water supply.

While the victim's back was turned, the accomplice snuck into the home and stole jewellery and cash.

Police constable Kev Oakes of the Swinton Volume Crime Team reported that neither of the women were hurt but that both were "deeply upset".

"They feel that their homes have been invaded and they share our determination to see these people behind bars," he said.

There are a number of steps that households can take in order to avoid being the victim of bogus callers.

If someone comes to the door, check the identity of the caller before you open the door. Look out of the window or use a 'spy hole'.

If you have a door bar or chain, put it on before answering the door and do not open the door fully until you are satisfied that the caller is not a threat.

Do not hesitate to ask for identification if someone comes to the door and claims to be a tradesman or business representative.

A genuine caller will be happy to show their identification and should even allow you to call their employer to verify it.

Any homeowner who is still uncomfortable dealing with an uninvited caller should ask him or her to call back at a more convenient time, when a family member or neighbour is present.

If the visitor is authentic, they will be happy to come back later.

Remember to inform your neighbours of any concerns.

Some people may even like to consider joining a Neighbourhood Watch scheme for added security.

A Neighbourwatch Group in Bournemouth has recently been selected to make a film warning residents about bogus callers.
