Buying home insurance online 'is now subject to voluntary guidelines'

Consumers shopping for home insurance online might find it has become easier in recent months, which could be as a result of more companies adopting voluntary guidelines.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has imposed the rules on web-based providers as well as price comparison websites where they are listed.

Homeowners should see an improvement in the clarity of information presented on the internet, particularly when it comes to the excess that would be payable in the event of insurance claims and any optional extras that are not included in the original quote.

Nick Starling, the ABI director of general insurance and health, said the guidance is helping "millions of customers ... get the best policy for their needs before they click to buy".

What's more, Graeme Trudgill, head of corporate affairs at the British Insurance Brokers' Association, pointed out that selecting the cheapest deal, without looking at exactly what it covers, could be a costly mistake in the long run.
