Car insurance customers among those targeted by mobile phone crackdown
One British police force is handing out £60 fines and three penalty points - which are likely to hike up the price of car insurance premiums - to drivers who are caught using a mobile phone at the wheel.
Norfolk Constabulary has already caught more than 50 motorists committing the offence during the first week of its month-long programme.
The Think! Norfolk campaign features posters and advertisements which order drivers to "zip it" when on the road.
People caught using a mobile phone whilst driving could see their fine raised to £1,000 if taken to court, while car insurance quotes may escalate in price.
Inspector Russell Hickford said: "Drivers using mobile phones whilst driving are not only breaking the law they are putting every other road users in danger as well."
Somerville Road in Worcester was last week unveiled as the UK's top hotspot for car insurance claims, with the road smothered in bubble-wrap to raise awareness of the importance of road safety.
