Car scammers 'costing Britons millions'
Unscrupulous individuals last year scammed more than £3 million from individuals looking to sell their vehicle.
The scam works by someone cold calling the seller and offering to set up a matching service to sell the car for a small fee.
However, once this fee has been paid the seller never hears from the matching agent again and has lost their money.
Mike Haley, Office of Fair Trading director of consumer protection, said: "We are working with the industry and enforcement partners across the UK to crackdown on scammers who are preying on consumers during the economic downturn."
In related news, Britons were recently warned that cutting back on their car insurance during the economic downturn to reduce their monthly outgoings could prove to be a false economy.
Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers' Association, stated that the cost of having an accident when you do not have sufficient cover could be dear.
