'Recession helps reduce car emissions' – and could lower car insurance
The need to cut motoring costs has led to a greater uptake of low-polluting cars ? something car insurance customers may wish to consider as they could save money.
Last year, the average emissions from new cars fell by a record level and one expert feels the recession played an important role.
Neil Wallis, head of communications for the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership, said: "There's [been] some very special factors over the last year ... which include the recession ? people are more focused on cutting driving costs."
Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders indicate the carbon emissions from new cars sold in the UK last year was down by 5.4 per cent compared to 2008 ? a figure of 149.5 grams per kilometre of CO2.
The government's car scrappage scheme also contributed to the lowering of pollution, with the average vehicle purchased under the deal emitting 28.6 per cent less CO2 than the car it replaced.
Cheap car insurance may also be available for drivers of energy-efficient vehicles as many insurers look favourably upon those who own electric and hybrid cars.
