Young car insurance customers 'urged to stay safe on the road'

Young drivers in the Scottish town of Cumbernauld are to be offered extra safety advice and training to cut accidents on the road ? something which could help them save money on car insurance.

Local driving instructor Denise Shepherd is teaming up with road safety charity Brake as part of a new campaign entitled 2young2die.

Hard-hitting DVDs and websites will be used to emphasise the importance of staying safe while driving and will highlight the impact of speed, distractions, alcohol and drugs, and the consequences of road accidents.

Mary Williams OBE, chief executive of Brake, said: "This vital project can help explain the horror of killing your mates in the back, or a child on foot, or being permanently paralysed - and the vital need to slow up, belt up and sober up."

The charity says motor accidents are the main cause of death in the 15-24 age range, while a Department for Transport shows road deaths fell seven per cent in the 12 months to September 2009.

By staying safe while driving, young drivers can also reduce their car insurance costs and build up a no-claims discount.
