Clear snow and icicles 'to avoid damaged roofing and gutters'

Consumers with home insurance building policies should endeavour to remove heavy snow drifts and large icicles from their roofing and gutters to prevent damage to their property.

That is according to advice from Tayside Fire and Rescue and Perth and Kinross Council, who have suggested individuals carry out the job themselves where it is safe to do so.

Debris from wintry conditions not only pose a risk to the building, but to passing pedestrians on nearby walkways and alternative entrances should be used where possible.

Gutters have also been known to break or collapse under the weight of snow and householders may benefit from checking their roof once it begins to melt, particularly as this event can make existing icicles bigger.

However, a thaw may not occur within the next few days as the Met Office has predicted widespread ice and snow is likely to continue throughout the week, particularly in central and southern Britain, as well as Wales and Northern Ireland.
