Home improvements 'can uncover property problems'

Individuals taking on home improvement projects can uncover major problems with their property which can turn a minor job into a major one, one industry expert has warned.

What could simply start out as redecorating a room could lead to major rewiring or renovation work if a problem is uncovered in a property, according to Andrew Leech, director at the National Home Improvement Council.

He warned that these discoveries may not be covered by an individual's home insurance and could lead to significant cost implications for owners.

Mr Leech noted that this problem is more common in older properties.

Figures released by home improvement retailer Kingfisher recently showed that Britons have caught the DIY bug, with revenues at its largest subsidiary B&G doubling during the first quarter of the year to £58 million, in comparison to the same period in 2008.
