Home insurance could be best way to protect against burglary threat

Scores of London householders may want to reach for the telephone or computer and seek a home insurance quote, after it was revealed that prolific burglars are carrying out a robbing spree in the capital.

Lenient penalties, as well as releasing convicted thieves and granting bail to those awaiting trial, have led to many burglars feeling they have nothing to lose.

It is thought that this, as well as the recession causing some people to take drastic and unlawful action, is behind a ten per cent year-on-year rise in home robbery rates in London.

Sir Paul Stephenson, Britain's most senior police officer, said: "We see significant activity by people accused of burglary because there is [often] nothing to lose. We do know prolific burglars continue to burgle until a significant age if that is their bent in life."

Investing in a home insurance policy now could be a good idea for homeowners concerned that they could be targeted by carefree thieves.

The burglary earlier this week of an elderly homeowner in Devon who was knocked to the ground in his property and robbed of more than £200 could illustrate the importance of having home insurance.
