Home insurance customers 'saving on DIY'

Increasing numbers of people are saving money by renovating their homes rather than moving ? and could save extra by shopping around for cheap house insurance.

According to George Clarke, home improvements expert at the Ideal Home Show, the recession has forced people to reassess their plans for a better home.

"Thankfully people are staying where they are and making their existing houses into the home of their dreams. They are adding value to what they already have rather than wasting money trying to climb up the property ladder," he said.

He commented that popular measures this spring included stripping back floorboards and walls ? and even freshening up a room by painting it all white.

An article in the Sunday Times last week indicated those choosing to renovate were using materials such as ceramics, woodwork, stone, glass, metalwork and textiles to create a natural look in the home.

Homeowners saving money by indulging in DIY may also wish to look out for the best deal on house insurance if they want to make further savings.
