Home insurance customers urged to remain vigilant after flooding problems

Home insurance customers caught up in some of Britain's worst flooding have seen off the worst of the rain, if meteorological experts are to be believed.

Three of the four severe flood warnings in Cumbria have been downgraded by the Environment Agency (EA), with only Keswick remaining at significant risk.

But the EA is warning residents in Cumbria and southern Scotland to remain vigilant for signs of flood-related damage.

Some structures could have been weakened by the floods and there could still be undiscovered issues with household items.

Thousands of belongings are expected to have been ruined by the muddy waters that have decimated properties across the region - with home contents insurance claims likely to be popular in the coming weeks.

Cumbria Constabulary Superintendent Steve Johnson said: "The flooding and severe weather has weakened structures across the area. These structures are being checked, but in the meantime people should not take unnecessary risks."

The Cumbrian floods of the last week have resulted in almost 2,000 homes being evacuated, three of the county's bridges collapsing and could cost up to £100 million to repair.
