House insurance customers warned: Valentine's night is burglar's favourite

Homeowners are being advised to take extra care in securing their property on Valentine's night if they wish to avoid making a house insurance claim.

According to Greater Manchester Police, burglars often target February 14th as couples let their guard down and, in most cases, go out for the evening.

As such, residents are warned they should lock all doors and windows, set any burglar alarms they own and use lights, radios and time switches to make a home appear occupied.

Superintendent David Wilkinson said: "Residents can play their part by following the advice given to make sure they do not lose their loved valuables to callous criminals."

Tips for people heading away for the whole weekend include asking a neighbour to enter a house and move the curtains, park a car or switch the lights on to give the impression the owners are in - all of which could help to prevent a burglary and subsequent house insurance claim.

Magician Paul Daniels is one person who may be relying on a house insurance policy after suffering a burglary recently.
