Police crackdown could reduce home insurance claims on bikes
A police crackdown on bike thefts could help reduce home insurance claims from cyclists.
The scheme aims to target bike thieves in Leeds using special capture bikes, potentially providing peace of mind for anyone whose bike is covered by their home contents insurance.
Currently deployed on the campuses of the University of Leeds and Leeds Metropolitan University, their usage have already led to six arrests.
Their use follows similar strategies that deployed capture cars and capture houses.
Inspector Simon Jessop of the North West Inner Neighbourhood Policing Team heralded the results that the scheme had already yielded.
"We hope that by highlighting our use of this new tactic it will send out a clear deterrent message to thieves that the risk of them getting caught is higher than ever," he said.
A police-organised event in Manchester at the end of January gave cyclists the opportunity to have their bikes chipped and tagged to try to avoid the need to make a home insurance claim.
