New law makes buying car insurance online 'better for the environment'
Customers buying car insurance online will be able to receive their documents by email thanks to new legislation which has been passed.
The law will allow drivers to print their motor insurance certificate at home when required - reducing the need for paperwork sent through the post.
About 40 million hard copies are distributed every year and recent postal strikes have highlighted the need for a speedier, more environmentally-conscious solution, said Graeme Trudgill from the British Insurance Brokers' Association.
He added: "After five years and discussions with numerous ministers, we are delighted to see these changes in legislation".
From the end of this month (April), customers can receive an email with their motor insurance certificate attached - or they can download it by accessing a secure part of the provider's website.
Before this legislation was passed, a document printed from the internet would not be accepted by the police or post office as proof that a vehicle was insured.
