Pet insurance 'a must for animal owners'

Individuals who own a pet have been advised of the need to take out comprehensive pet insurance.

The Irish Times has reported that the cost of veterinary bills can be large for pet owners who do not have cover in place, especially if their animal is prone to illness or is in need of surgery.

Orla Aungier, of the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, told the paper: "We cannot stress the importance of pet insurance enough.

"Like any insurance, you don't know when you're going to need it. Unfortunately with pets, if they end up having ... surgery ... the costs can spiral so quickly."

Dr Mark Stickney, director of general surgery services at the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, recently told MarcoNews that pet health can be boosted by ensuring that animals are well groomed and fed a healthy, high-quality diet.
