Pet insurance 'crucial to 60% of owners who cannot afford vet bills'
One-in-five cat and dog owners admit they would not be able to afford a significant veterinary bill should their animal become ill or injured, yet many are still not investing in the only solution to such a problem - pet insurance.
Research by Gocompare.com revealed that 60 per cent of owners do not have pet insurance to cover them financially should medical treatment for their four-legged friends be required.
While many are happy to splash out an average of £676 a year to look after a dog or cat, a number spend more on treats than on comprehensive cover.
John Miles, head of product development at the price comparison site, advised people to invest in a pet insurance policy.
He said: "Over the last ten years pet insurance has become more widely available and much more affordable. Premiums can start from as little as £39.60 a year for cats and £44.40 a year for dogs."
Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home last year stated that pets were more popular than holidays - with many people relying on animals for companionship.
