Residents in the North West of England warned of flooding risk

Homeowners in the North West of England may be at risk of flooding over the coming days, with heavy rain forecast.

Up to 50-60mm of rainfall is anticipated in parts of Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Lancashire today (June 22nd) and tomorrow (June 23rd). This figure could potentially increase further to 100mm in some places.

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for locations in the aforementioned areas, while the Environment Agency has alerted people to the risk of surface water flooding roads and land.

It added that there is a danger of floods from rivers in areas that are vulnerable to large amounts of rain.

In order to address the risk, the government agency has sent out teams to check flood defences, clear river blockages and check river levels, while advising people to stay away from swollen rivers and avoid driving through floodwater.

Heather Stott, BBC weather presenter in the North West, said: "There will be heavy and prolonged rain through the day, difficult driving conditions and the risk of localised flooding.

"It's going to feel pretty windy too. Gale force winds gusting to 50mph will make for a blustery day."

It is also expected that the unsettled conditions will continue into the weekend.

"The wet and windy weather will continue through the day, clearing all but Cumbria and North Lancashire by the end of the night. It will be wet and windy at times on Saturday - but much more showery, with more heavy and persistent rain during Sunday," Ms Stott continued.

Following the bout of wet weather that hit Britain earlier this month, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) issued flooding advice to homeowners, advising them to contact their home insurance provider as soon as possible if they notice any flood damage.

The ABI also warned residents not to throw away any items that they believe cannot be restored, as there is always a chance that they can be repaired.
However, it urged people to throw away any belongings that are putting them in danger.
