Students advised to check insurance before moving away

People with house insurance policies have been advised that it is better to be safe than sorry if their children are moving into student accommodation this month.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has recommended that students be vigilant with their home insurance, given that they will take, on average, over £3,000 worth of possessions to university.

Top tips for students include checking to see if they are covered under their parents existing policy and shopping around to find the best deals. The ABI also offered security tips, reminding students to lock all windows and doors when they are not home.

This advice come after Gocompare.com urged students last week to not simply assume they'd be covered by their parents insurance, and to read the small print on their house insurance policies.

Nick Starling, ABI’s director of general insurance & health, said that although moving away from home was an exciting time of change for many, it also brought about trepidation.

"Make sure you have one less thing to worry about by arranging insurance cover to protect your possessions,” he added.
