Bonfire Night caution could prevent home insurance claim

Home insurance policy holders have been warned of the increased threat of having to make a claim on Bonfire Night.

Price comparison site Confused.com advises homeowners to consider the risks of injury and damage while they are lighting sparklers and enjoying fireworks.

With so many people at bonfire parties and firework displays the increased number of empty houses could attract thieves.

So leaving lights on and making sure all doors and windows are locked may be vital for house insurance customers on November 5th.

Darren Black, head of household insurance at Confused.com, said: "One way of reducing the financial risk you expose your self and home to is to ensure adequate insurance is in place. Check your policies offer cover for accidental damage, public liability and theft."

It is also worth considering that the loud bangs of fireworks can mask the sound of rogues breaking into a property, so extra vigilance could be a good policy.

Earlier this week Moneysupermarket.com revealed that more than 6,500 people were injured at Bonfire Night celebrations in 2008.
