UNISON: Job cuts will hit hard
A public sector workers' union has warned planned redundancies will hit people hard.
UNISON has campaigned against Nottingham council's decision to cut up to 800 jobs, half of which may be compulsory redundancies.
Regional organiser Peter Savage said the local authority should examine financial issues before putting its plans into action.
"Let's look at the underlying budget pressures, rather than slashing jobs that will hit the people of Nottingham hard," he urged.
Some workers may be concerned about the lack of income redundancies could cause - which may mean they are unable to afford essentials such as home insurance.
Members of UNISON and other council trade unions attended a rally yesterday (Tuesday) to protest against the planned job cuts. The council announced a discussion on the issue would be deferred until later this month.
UNISON is also calling for the government to review the management of the energy industry, following the announcement of 450 job cuts at E.ON.
