Giving something back
UIA Charitable Foundation
The UIA Charitable Foundation is our independent grant-making foundation that gives financial support to charities. In 2017, we donated a total of £20,000 to good causes close to the hearts of our committee, trade union partners and colleagues.
This included supporting two charities near our head offices in Stevenage. These were Stevenage Haven, which provides shelter and support for single people experiencing homelessness; and Stevenage Community Foodbank, which helps people in sudden financial crisis who can’t afford to put food on the table. As well as donating to each of these worthwhile charities, our colleagues also pledged their time and support by collecting and donating supplies and food items.
During 2017, we also continued our support towards War on Want, a charity which fights global poverty; Ellesmere Port & Neston Romanian Appeal (Children International), an organisation that helps prevent poverty among young people in Romania; and Banana Link, a charity which raises awareness of the poor living and working conditions faced by banana and pineapple producers in Latin America, Africa and the Caribbean.
In 2017, we raised almost £5,000 for a number of good causes through our colleague fundraising efforts.
One such organisation we supported was Garden House Hospice Care in Letchworth Garden City through initiatives such as staff collections, a Christmas raffle and a book club. During 2018, we have continued to fundraise by supporting the Charlie Chick Easter Campaign, donating over 600 Cadbury’s Creme Eggs to the hospice for its volunteers to sell with knitted chicks. Through our donation, we hope to raise £1,000 for the hospice.
As well as giving grants and fundraising for good causes, we also provide sponsorship. In 2017, one of the main beneficiaries of our support was Paralympic bronze-medal-winning swimmer Amy Marren, who received £20,000 towards her training and competition costs.
