Do I need home emergency cover?

Home emergency cover – is it worth it? That’s the question many homeowners ask themselves, often because they’re unsure of what their current home insurance policy does and doesn’t cover. Here, we explain why it might be worth your investment…

What is home emergency cover?

Home emergency cover is usually an add-on to a standard home insurance policy. It protects you against the cost of repairs should an emergency occur. An emergency could be a burst water pipe, a broken boiler or a broken window – something that leaves your home insecure or exposes it to potential further damage. It also covers you for things like lost keys and vermin infestations.

The beauty of home emergency cover is that if you ring your insurer straightaway they will treat it, as it says on the tin, like an emergency. They’ll take your details and send someone round to your property ASAP – be it a plumber, an electrician or pest control to rid your house of any unwanted creatures!

What does the policy pay for?

With UIA Home Emergency Cover you have access to a 24-hour emergency helpline that you can call as soon as a home emergency happens.

Say, for example, a water pipe inside your home has burst, you can expect the following benefits from your cover, including:

  • free contractor call-outs
  • up to two hours of labour costs
  • parts and materials costs up to the value of £100
  • a 12 month guarantee on some work, such as plumbing and locksmiths

UIA Home Emergency Cover includes dealing with emergencies involving:

  • home heating systems, including a central heating boiler
  • repairs to plumbing and drainage blockages or breakages
  • damage to doors, windows or locks
  • repairs to broken or damaged toilets
  • vermin infestation
  • lost keys

With UIA Home Emergency Cover you will also be covered for emergency accommodation costs and travel expenses. This means that if a burst pipe floods your home, we’ll pay for you to stay in a hotel or B&B while you make more long-term arrangements. This is up to a fixed limit of £250.

Are there any things to be aware of?

One of the main reasons people take out home emergency cover is for boiler protection. However most policies, including UIA Home Emergency Cover, exclude boilers that are 10 years old or more, that haven’t been installed properly or haven’t been annually maintained or serviced.

Also, you need to make sure that you contact your insurer within 48 hours of the emergency happening and get their approval before any works are carried out. Most insurance providers won’t pay out if you try and fix the problem yourself and then attempt to redeem the costs afterwards.

What happens if I need to make a claim?

If you need to make a claim our customer service team are on hand to guide you every step of the way. It’s a really straightforward process and we do everything we can to make the experience as stress-free as possible for you.

As soon as you can, call the 24-hour emergency helpline, quote the reference number and state that you are insured with UIA. We will then ask you to provide us with your name, address, postcode, and the nature of the emergency.

We will take your details and decide on the best course of action to limit your loss and/or repair the damage. If the incident relates to an emergency covered by your policy we will send out an emergency contractor to deal with it.

If you do need to check-in to a hotel or B&B for the night you just need to check that UIA will cover the cost as part of your policy. Then you simply pay the cost of the accommodation, keep the receipts, and then we will reimburse you.

Do I really need home emergency cover?

It all depends on your individual circumstances really, and how worried you are about things potentially going wrong. For many people however, it does provide real peace of mind, knowing that the problem, no matter how big or small, will be sorted quickly and efficiently.

If you’re interested in home emergency cover, we offer a policy as an add-on to our Flexi Home Insurance, or you can upgrade to our Signature cover, which includes it as standard, and more!
